How should I walk into church?
“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” Hebrews 4:16
Firstly, your appearance. People need to know you are cool. It starts at home by waking up with enough time to make yourself, and your family, presentable. Clothes need to be neat and stylish. Hair needs to be brushed and groomed. Beards need to trimmed and shaved. Make up needs to be chosen and applied. No hair out of place, no shirt that is stained, no pants that are crumpled. To walk into church your appearance needs to be impeccable. Because everyone knows that church is only for the well-dressed and cool.
Secondly, your christian smile. People need to know you are perfect. Once you have arrived at church, you now need to put on the Christian smile. No matter how broken you are as a person, arriving at church means that all this brokenness must be put aside – marital arguments, family drama, work stress, personal problems and everything else that we battle with must be side lined for the art of the Christian smile. Your perfection is critical when walking into church. Because everyone knows that church is only for the perfect and happy.
But what is the truth? Is our appearance and christian smile what God desires when we walk into church? Is this how we are ought to walk into church?
“No! Not at all” For Scripture makes it clear that
- God places our heart before our appearance. God desires us to be more focused, as he is, on our hearts rather than our appearance when we walk into church
- We are imperfect. God desires us to be honest before him and others in church rather than fabricating a smile when we walk into church
So, as you prepare to walk into church this Sunday. Approach the throne of grace with confidence in whatever you are wearing, and where ever you are in life.
