“See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands;

your walls are ever before me.” Isaiah 49:16

 If you have ever had the delightful privilege of loving somebody deeply and endearingly you may well have wanted to express that love in a permanent, appealing way. You may have decided to have some special, meaningful words engraved onto a simple bracelet, pendant or a valuable piece of jewellery, as a permanent marker of your journey of love.  Each time either of you looks at that particular piece of jewellery you are reminded of the depth of your love for one another.

Could it be that this idea of engraving in love came from God Himself?

Listen again to what Isaiah wrote, See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me.” Why would God say this to His people? It was because Israel, just like us needed constant affirmation of God’s love. God loves us enough to engrave our names in the palms of His Hands in the same way He did it for Israel.

  • Even those of us who have not yet yielded to His love and authority.
  • Even when we are rebellious as Israel was in Isaiah’s day.
  • Even when we feel far from God today.

How can we be sure of this? Like the people of Israel you may want to raise an objection, “… Zion said, “The Lord has forsaken me, the Lord has forgotten me,” Isaiah 49:14. You may feel alone in your journey of life and that God is not involved. But is that true? Jesus demonstrated the full extent of His love for us by dying on a lonely cross with the nails of our sin keeping Him there. The nail marks in His Hands are the engraving of our names and the certainty that we are never forgotten.

Prayer Father, help us to remember that in the middle of our struggles, your love is so great that it is deeply engraved in the palms of Your hands. Amen.
