“Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

John 14:6

Your palms are sweeting and your heart is racing as you stand before the judge on the charge of murder. You are finally given a chance to give your defence. You immediately proclaim how you have lived a well-do-to life for 46 years – you listened to your parents, you stayed away from drugs, you stayed away from smoking, you never stole a thing, you tried not to lie, you have never been unfaithful to your spouse, you are an honest worker and in general you are a well-to-do person. You only really just slipped up.

Do you think this argument would stand in any honest court?

Even though we all know this argument would never hold, many people still think that this way of fairness will work with God on the day of judgement, even though it brings a heart of insecurity and fear when thinking of the day of judgement. “Look at all of the good I have done, put it on the scale, I hope it outweighs all my bad things”.

What can bring our hearts peace on the day of judgement? To know grace. To know that we have nothing to fear, to know that our sins are forgiven. To know that God will not put our good and our bad on a scale and let us hope for the best. Only Jesus Christ offers this grace and peace. Only Jesus is the way, the truth and the life and to received this grace all we need to do is have faith in the grace that Jesus offers (Ephesians 2:8). I am saved by Jesus, not my good works.

Prayer: Thank you Jesus for your grace, help me accept the grace you offer, that my salvation rests upon you and you alone.
