About Biblical “Bad” Words

Most people would probably admit that humans can make a mess of things, and that evil is undoubtedly something that exists in the world today. The Bible actually has a lot to say on this topic, but it uses strange vocabulary to describe the problem of human evil. Since we don’t use this type of language on a day-to-day basis, we often ignore some of the profound wisdom the Bible has to offer.

Three of the ways that the Bible describes human evil is with the concepts: sin, iniquity, and transgression. Sin is the most widely used in the Bible, and it the most varied. It, in its most basic form, simply means to miss the mark, or fall short of a goal. Iniquity describes behaviour that is crooked, like stealing. Transgression refers to the breaking of trust, such as going back on your word with a friend.

The word “sin” is one of the most common bad words in the Bible, but what does it really mean? In this video, we’ll explore the concept of “moral failure” that underlies this important biblical word. Get ready to discover a profound and realistic portrait of the human condition.

The Bible offers many views on human nature, including profound diagnoses of human evil. However, because it uses a unique vocabulary to describe this evil, it often gets overlooked in modern-day society.
