“Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God!”

Romans 11:33a

It is amazing to see the extent to which Scripture affirms that God brings about various events in our lives: God plans our days before we are born (Psalm 139:16); all our actions are under God’s providential care (Acts 17:28); all our talents and abilities are from the Lord (1 Corinthians 4:7). This is called the providence of the Lord – God’s continual involvement with all created things in such a way that he preserves, governs and works with all creation.

You may be thinking then, what about my free will? The Bible upholds the providence of God and the responsibility of our actions. It seems better to affirm that God causes all things that happen, but that he does so in such a way that he somehow upholds our ability to make willing, responsible choices. Choices that have real and eternal results, and for which we are held accountable. How this actually works, scripture is quiet on. A young child can comprehend such truth, but such a truth can be pondered over, searched, examined for a lifetime. And even after a lifetime of research, still not reach the bottom of the well of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God. I am ok with not being able to fully understand -I do not think my finite mind could ever fully grasp our infinite God.

This is an example of the richness of the Gospel. A young child can comprehend the full message of the gospel, and a person can dedicate their entire lives to vigorous studies on the gospel and never reach the bottom of God’s riches in the gospel.

What an awesome Father we have in heaven.

Prayer: Father, you are far beyond all that I can imagine, yet you are intimately involved in my life. Lord, thank you for the personal, living and loving relationship we can share, help me to always seek you, to love you with all my mind – but also, Jesus please forgive me when I set myself up as a higher authority than you. Lord, today I remember and confess again, you are God. Amen
