“The elder, To the lady chosen by God and to her children, whom I love in the truth—and not I only, but also all who know the truth— because of the truth, which lives in us and will be with us forever.”

2 John 1:1-2

Can we know the truth about our big life questions? Why we are here, how we came into existence?  What is the purpose in life? Is there a God? What happens after death?

The Apostle John, the author called “the elder” who penned 2 John, is convinced that we can know such truth. In fact, he places a big central theme of his letters to truth – the first 2 verses repeat truth three times. John goes on to say that truth (verse 2) is the foundation of all valid Christian fellowship, and that, therefore, truth is primary for the Christian.

But where do we find this truth on our big life questions? Such truth is found in the person, work and word of our triune God. Consider the words of Jesus in John 14:6 when Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life”. It is enlightening that here John speaks about the truth in the same way that the Lord Jesus spoke to his disciples about the Spirit: ‘He lives with you and will be in you’ (Jn. 14:17). Because ‘the Spirit is the truth’ (1 Jn. 5:7) this is a natural equation to make.

Therefore, yes, we must read and study our Bible! If we had to make a pie chart of our day, what would it look like? Yes, we must be praying! If we lived in the time of Daniel, would the kings decree change anything in our prayer life? And yes, we must have Christ in our lives!

Is there a nice neat summary of what I must cling to as truth? The Apostles Creed gives a good starting block.

I believe in God the Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth

And in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord

Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary

Suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead and buried: He descended into hell

The third day he rose again from the dead

He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty

From where he shall come to judge the living and the dead

I believe in the Holy Spirit

I believe in the holy universal church

the communion of saints

The forgiveness of sins

The resurrection of the body

And the life everlasting

Amen.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, please help me love truth. Give me the strength to live a life built on the truth, which is found in who you are, what you did and your revelation of yourself in the Bible. Please forgive me when I think or act as if I am the originator of truth. Amen
